CENSUS IS COMING -- AND SO ARE THE SCAMMERS
The scammers never sleep. The upcoming 2010 Census of our country presents them with innumerable opportunities to obtain money from you illegally, to access your computer, and to get personal and financial information which can be used against you. Many of us can spot a phony approach or a fake request, but because the Census is carried out only once every ten years, it is important to be aware of the opportunities scammers have to exploit this event, especially in light of the technological advances that have taken place since the last census.
The Census will be conducted with a mass mailing sent to U.S. households by the U.S. Postal Service. There will be ten questions to answer, and recipients will be asked to return the completed form by U.S. mail. Those who fail to return the form will be visited by an official U.S.Census worker who will have a photo ID and who will ask only the ten questions that appear on the official Census form that was mailed previously. There is no reason for a Census worker to enter your home.
The Census will NOT ask for Social Security numbers or other information, bank or credit card information, or any kind of password or PIN. The Census will NOT ask for money or a voluntary donation and will NOT promote any cause or political view or party.
The Census will NOT be conducted by email or online, nor will there be email/online followup. Be particularly aware of email messages that contain links, as these may be phony in the sense that the link address may not match the actual link location. Beware of "phishing," which directs email users to enter sensitive information at a fake website which looks almost identical to a legitimate one.
The Census Bureau website is http://www.census.gov. Near the bottom of the home page, there is a link about fraudulent activity and scams.
Mount Vernon At Home will update information on Census fraud and scammers as it becomes available.
